Why blasting people on social media doesn't work and the model Christ patterned for us.

I don't know what we believers are thinking these days, blasting people on social media in order to make our point 100% authentic.

"A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, and contentions are like the bars of a castle."  Proverbs 18:19

Check out Facebook and nine times out of ten within the first thirty seconds of scrolling you'll see a blog post about a controversial hot topic.  It's either politics or religion.

And directly underneath is where the drama lies.

Drama.  Yeah, I said it.

Ever notice how brave people are behind a computer screen?

Haters gonna hate.

Only…Christ followers aren't called to be haters.

That's not our job.

That's Satan's job.

And he's doing a pretty good job…

at his job.

Here's the thing.  Christ said there are two main things to carry out:

1.  Love the Lord (with all your heart, mind, and soul).

2.  Love your neighbor as yourself.  (Matthew 22:37-40)

And He did just that.

Christ taught truth about His heavenly Father and gave glory due His name.

And He often sat down to dinner with unbelievers.

People did not understand him.

Religious leaders thought He was out of his mind for associating with just anybody.  I mean really, who sits down and eats with a tax collector?

Who stops everything to let little kids come running and sit on his lap?

Who talks to a woman who's known for sleeping around?

…and then defends her, forgives her, and sends her on her way. (John 8.)

Chances are, if you're a real live human being, you've sinned.

The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

And sin

is sin.

Stealing pencils from work

is sin.

Charging the company for lunch that has nothing to do with the company

is sin.

Lying to your spouse by hiding those three pair of shoes you just bought in your closet (and didn't tell him about)

is sin.  (Not that I've ever done that, btw.)

Little sins = SIN.

Big sins = SIN.

Sin is sin and that's all sin is.

Sin is not a joke.

I sin every day.

The Bible says don't:

  • lie
  • cheat
  • steal
  • commit adultery
  • covet
  • worship idols
  • take the Lord's name in vain
  • kill

And many other sins laid out in the Old and New Testament (I just referenced the 10 commandments, which are a good rule to live by seeing as how it's still not a good idea to kill somebody.)

And yet, we each do at least one of these a day, if only in our minds.

Jesus said if you've done it in your mind, you've done it (Mark 7:21-23)

"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." (Proverbs 23:7)

That's why He wants us to keep our minds pure and holy.  Because what you think about…you bring about.

The point is:

The believer is not to wallow in sin.

     But Jesus also said: love.

I have people I love who don't love Jesus or believe in Him or maybe they believe in Him, but they kind of live by their own rules.

Shoving a strong judgment down their throats based on a Bible verse is not gonna win them.

That is not how Jesus did it.

Jesus loved and accepted everybody.  Did he know their thoughts, their motives, their sins?

You bet.

Did he blast them to smithereens and berate and call them out for it?

Nope.  He sat down and had dinner with them.  He drank water from the local watering hole (aka well) with them.  He called them to come (climb down out of their trees) and walk with Him.

He got to know them.

And he patiently showed them the way.

Blasting people is never going to work.

You may as well give up that mess.

If someone comes at you about your way of life or how you raise your kid, does that make you want to jump up and say, "Hallelujah, you are so right, bless him Lord, I am so wrong, quick, let me change my ways!"?

Are you crazy?

Look at this verse in Proverbs.

"A brother offended is more unyielding than a strong city, and quarreling is like the bars of a castle."

Come at somebody about anything

and you're guaranteed lockdown mode.

And you don't have to blast them to offend them, either; such as a subtle post, a word spoken or written on someone else's wall.

Is this real life?!  Does anyone else see the irony in this?

We don't talk face to face anymore.

We talk wall to wall.

And that's where we preach, too.

Amen, sister.

That's right.  I'm preaching right now.

(Sort of.)

Jesus said for us to be salt and light..  Do you know what those two things have in common?

Salt is savory.  Food is bland without it.  A life without Christ is bland (although one may not realize it) – until a person gets a little taste of Jesus, a fresh perspective smacking of Christ's abounding, effervescent love .

Which develops a taste for more.

Seriously, can you eat mashed potatoes without salt?  Maybe if you've never had salt.

But once you've had salt – the potatoes are flavorless without it.

And who wants a boring, dull, flavorless life?

Same with light.

"Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand – SHINE!

Keep open house; be generous with your lives.

By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God,

This generous Father in heaven."  (Matthew 5:16, MSG)

A life accustomed to walking in darkness knows no difference.

But shine a little light on that commonplace darkness.

A soft, warm, glowing light.

And guess what.

They want more.

And eventually, when they accept the Light into their hearts and lives, that Light crowds out the darkness of sin.

That Light cleans house .

Christ deals with the sin of each person in His own time and way.

Yes, we must emulate what a redeemed life looks like.  The Bible says we are to live above reproach.  Which simply means we pick ourselves back up off the floor when we mess up

{which happens daily}

and claim the forgiveness of our sins through the blood of Christ.  And we also claim victory over sin, and each time we grapple with that sin, if we're sincere, if we're hiding God's Word in our hearts,

God makes a way of escape.

He didn't say it would be easy.  But He did say His burden is light.

A light burden is one that bears a steady course, steering true towards heaven and the purposes of God.

There's nothing like a good soaking of "Son-filled" forgiveness interchanged for a dank cell of sin-filled darkness.

Yes, we stand for what the Bible says.  We march and speak out for the cause of Christ.  But not  with hate!  We believe Jesus Christ:

Came to earth as God in the flesh

Died for the sins of all mankind

Rose three days later

Ascended to heaven and sits at God's right hand

Left the Holy Spirit who indwells each believer

And will come again for His church someday.

Jesus said we are blessed when we speak the truth and are persecuted for it.  "My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble."  (Matthew 5:12).  We may get flack when we speak out, whether in public or on social media.

The key is two-fold:

1.  Don't retaliate

2.  Respond with love

We can speak the truth in love, and there is a time and a place and a way to do this.

Do you have loved ones who hold different views on life than you?  Do you want to reach them for Christ?

We must be sensitive to this issue.  We must show love and concern for these people, spend time with them, care for them.

Be salt and light.

It's the only way to reach them.

The written word is a powerful venue.

Be careful how you use it.

"Jesus once again addressed them:  'I am the world's Light.  No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness.  I provide plenty of light to live in'".  (John 8:12, MSG.)

"I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of."  (John 10:10)

"A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, and contentions are like the bars of a castle."  Proverbs 18:19
